I've enjoyed immensely reading through this thread. We are brand new to ducks. We have quite a few ducklings right now and we tried to get a couple of the ducks that we were most drawn to. We added 2 WH at my husband's request and I am so glad we did. As ducklings they are just gorgeous and from reading (here) about what good layers they are, their overall temperaments and just how gorgeous they are- I really think we are going to love watching these ladies (we had them sexed) grow. They also happened to be the ones my husband and I adopted (although they are all our ducks- each child was allowed to pick one and name her) and we happily nabbed the WHs for ourselves. :D

I'd love to raise show quality. That will be a while from now since I'm just starting. Thanks for the info on the shortcuts to the names of things. One of my hens looks like she should be show quality. Of course, since I know nothing, that is just a proud mama talking about the beauty of 1 of her girls. :) I know conformation is important and I would need to talk to several people, probably at shows, to learn that information.

I got 3 WH ducklings from the Saugeen Fur and Feather Show in Ontario, Canada and i came home thinking i had gotten lucky when i randomly picked 3 ducklings, 2 girls and 1 boy. It turns out that i got 2 boys and 1 girl. They grow so fast, they are almost 3 weeks old and are starting to get their feathers in. I love them to pieces, even if they are not fully warmed up to me yet :p lets just say they don't see me coming to cuddle them when they are sleeping XD

I just hatched out 12 welsh harlequin ducklings...some have dark bills, and some have orange bills, but some have a mixture...so we're not really sure how many drakes vs ducks we'll have. A couple have very light yellow down so I am hoping those might be gold phase.
We had 2 dead in shell at hatching time...not sure why since 12 hatched fine
1 egg candled clear, and 1 egg had a blood ring - early dead
Hatching started day 27 and lasted until late on day 29.
My 1st duck eggs & 1st shipped eggs, so must be beginners luck :)
Here's some pictures of them...

Here some pictures of my WH's. I bought them for a 4-H project, by a recommendation that i should buy from Metzer. I have since realized that I should have ordered from Holdereads, several of the ducks have facial striping (a DQ) :( does anyone have an opinion on the situation??

I will post pics if anyone wants to take a look at them....
