Does anyone know if it is possible to get a decently dark egg color while increasing size and lay rate with the Welsummer? My thought is to cross a wel roo x buff orp hen for f1 hens, and a buff roo on wels hens for and f1 cockerel. Then to cross the f1 for an f2 wel colored roo. Would I get a dark egg or just a brown/partridge orpington with an ordinary brown egg?
Im wanting a larger sized dark egg layer (marans to rock sized) with a better lay rate than the larger marans like wheatens, that I can also breed for meat. If I can keep the auto sexing of Wels, so much the better! Would I fare better starting with Marans?
I had thought about using cuckoo marans with buffs, and wels with buffs, then crossing the two sets of f2. Suggestions?
