I have read various places that it’s possible to sex Welsummers and Cuckoo Marans as chicks by their markings. If this this true, I’d love opinions on what these are—they are only a couple days old. They are all hatched by us, but the eggs are from Meyer’s, so hatchery stock.

The Welsummers:

Super cute! Wish I could help!

I'm guessing both 2s are cockerels. The welsummer has no eyeliner and a smudgier V head stripe. The cuckoo seems quite light in color. I'm not confident on cuckoo #1 being a pullet either. Maybe someone else has input there.

Thanks so much! I was leaning that way with the Welsummers, but had no clue with the Marans. I will try and remember to update in a couple months when it becomes obvious.

From what I understand the lighter marans #2 should be a cockerel because they feather in whiter. I am also leaning towards both welsummers being boys based on the smudgy eyeliner. I hope I am wrong though!

Welsummer #1 is a pullet. Even though the eyeliner isn't very defined on #2, my guess is that one is as well.

I'm not as familiar with Marans, but I think #1 is also probably a pullet.

These tend to be really sweet breeds, my Welsummer ladies are kind of shy, but gentle and my BCM chick so far is confident but patient with her flock mates. I'm sorry about your laying hen, but I hope you enjoy your new girls!
