Are Welsummers a good breed of chicken to start out with? I've read a lot of the breed reviews but I know there's always differences of opinion. I'm raising for meat as well as eggs so are they a good sized, meaty chicken (9-12 lbs) or are they strictly egg layers? How long will you have eggs available? I won't be ordering until April so there's no rush.

Of course I would recommend Welsummers to anyone. I started with the breed because of their beautiful dark spotted eggs. I also enjoy the color of this breed. They are an excellent foraging breed if you choose to free range. I cannot free range mine due to too many neighbor dogs. Some people say that Welsummers are slightly flighty. I cannot say this for mine. Most of them are quite tame. If you work with and handle any breed they can become pretty tame. The hens average 6 lbs and roos around 7. Most of my hens lay every other day. If you have a hen that lays every day they tend to not lay the darker eggs, which is what I am after. I'm ok with every other day because I only eat a few eggs and sell rest. So to answer your question, I would consider them dual purpose. I will have eggs available most year round. Unless the molt and completely quit. I have different age groups, so that might not be a big problem for me.
