welsummer roo x barred rock hens

Sorry to revive this very old thread....but we just hatched an egg laid by our BR mother and the roo is a welsummer. Our welsummer female went broody, so she's the 'mother'. Unfortunately, we didn't save any of her eggs and by the time we realized she was broody, all of hers were in the fridge. Our little hatchling is a day old now and doing great! I took it from mama since she's on 3 more eggs I started last week...so 2 weeks to go and hoping she stays on them. We let her bond with her chick last night and it went well and even when we separated them again, she went right back to work on the nest and the chick started pecking at food in the brooder so no traumatizing separation! I plan on slipping it back in with the others once they hatch, if she'll take it back.

SO....my question here is, of course....what do these crosses feather out looking like? And second...our baby is black, just like it's BR momma. Small white spot on the head and dark grey/black legs. Is this def a male???? I keep telling the mean *** rooster we have that he is going to be meeting his replacement because if we hatch out any males....that sucker is either dinner or heading to the pet cemetary. We technically aren't allowed chickens in our rural township because we only have 1 acre and they require 3 for 'livestock'. We've had our roo for a year with no complaints, but I think more than one would be pushing it! Anyway....hope there is a chance it's a hen!!!

Pics would be great to see as well!

You have a cockerel. I've hatched out 2 pullets and a cockerel from a welsummer/BR cross.

Black with white dot on head = cockerel
Black with no dot on head = pullet

Females will feather in black with red leakage. Males will feather in barred.

Here is the latest pullet I hatched.

Slightly disappointed...but happy he will have the barred coloring. That is pretty. He's in the brooder alone and is doing very well. We bring mama up to bond with him in the evenings. They eat together and she clucks to him and it's very sweet. We put her back on the nest and took him down with. He did not want to climb under her and she was focused on the eggs....so back he went into the brooder. I'm so glad she isn't upset when we take him away. I want them to bond so that once the others hatch in 2 more weeks, I can slip him back in with the gang and let her do her thing. I'm so afraid she will give up on the eggs if she has to take care of him full time. He was chirping alot and jumping around a bit ago so I took him out into my hands and he fell asleep. He has no other fluff buddies so I'm glad he's attaching to us. Maybe this roo will actually LIKE me! The welsummer i have thinks I'm his competition and I get attacked daily! ;)

So you won't get a sex linked colored chicks.....I would be disappointed for sure! But interested to see how it turned out.

You will get sex link colored chicks - black sex links. Males will have a white dot on their head and females will not. The mother passes the barring onto the sons. Daughters are black with red leakage.

Mine pictured above is now 5 weeks old. She hasn't started getting the leakage yet, but she will. The last one I hatched before that made it to 13 weeks, then I lost her to a hawk.

Another cool cross is a welsummer rooster over a light brahma hen. You get a buff columbian bird. If my light brahma would lay again, I'd hatch her egg - but she's a 4 year old hatchery hen and having reproduction issues.

What about welsummer and cuckoo maran both bantams ... Will that still produce a sex-link?

Yes, provided the welsummer is the cock bird and the marans is the hen.

Here's the sex link information:

After reading through these threads on Welbars I am a bit of a maze. I have exceptional Welsummers and Barred Rocks all APA standard and then some. So I decided to try and make some really good Welbars. I crossed the barred rock females with the welsummers males. My chicks have come out all black, black with a little white spot on the head, and black with a big white spot on the head. I see some of your chicks are either brown or black. Humm did I do some thing wrong? They are only 3-4 weeks old but still curious as to where to go from here with them. Will the black ones turn into some kind of a barred?

all black are females?
black with a little white spot on the head are ?????
black with a big white spot on the head are male?

From what I have read is you take the Barred male from this cross and you put him on some Welsummer females. Culling out all other females.

Correct or?
Any one really know what is going on?

OK, I'll take you up on this Rancher. I'm about to embark on the same project myself. I'm using the info at this site to go by:

Check it out. However I thought F1 (1st gen cross) would be classic easy colour sex-link. So maybe not so much. But it is the barred males from these F1 chicks that you want to put back to pure Welsummer females as the next (but not last) step.

Edited to say Happy Chooks wrote this: 'You will get sex link colored chicks - black sex links. Males will have a white dot on their head and females will not. The mother passes the barring onto the sons. Daughters are black with red leakage.'

So I guess that is the sex-link outcome of that first cross. See I've learnt something lol. Handy for me to know and for you to find out.:D
