Sorry to revive this very old thread....but we just hatched an egg laid by our BR mother and the roo is a welsummer. Our welsummer female went broody, so she's the 'mother'. Unfortunately, we didn't save any of her eggs and by the time we realized she was broody, all of hers were in the fridge. Our little hatchling is a day old now and doing great! I took it from mama since she's on 3 more eggs I started last week...so 2 weeks to go and hoping she stays on them. We let her bond with her chick last night and it went well and even when we separated them again, she went right back to work on the nest and the chick started pecking at food in the brooder so no traumatizing separation! I plan on slipping it back in with the others once they hatch, if she'll take it back.
SO....my question here is, of course....what do these crosses feather out looking like? And second...our baby is black, just like it's BR momma. Small white spot on the head and dark grey/black legs. Is this def a male???? I keep telling the mean *** rooster we have that he is going to be meeting his replacement because if we hatch out any males....that sucker is either dinner or heading to the pet cemetary. We technically aren't allowed chickens in our rural township because we only have 1 acre and they require 3 for 'livestock'. We've had our roo for a year with no complaints, but I think more than one would be pushing it! Anyway....hope there is a chance it's a hen!!!
Pics would be great to see as well!
