Cyn,
Can't help with any input on the BLRW, but as far as the welsummers go. Mine lay from mid February till early December. They always take December and January off. But, my girls are in an uninsulated, non heated, no artificial light building too!
I would'nt squirt out eggs in these frigid temps either!
You might have better luck with them through the winter with that southern sun!
Happy Holidays!
Christie
Thank you, Christie! A friend on BYC is going to provide me with a few eggs from hers when they start laying, which should be pretty soon. We're doing a little horse-trading, one of my birds for a few hatching eggs from her Welsummers, LOL. Her birds came from your eggs, so I know they came from some really nice dark ones! If I like them, and I bet I will, I'll probably get more from you later on.
I'm sure you've had enough FB by now. I'm interested in wellsummers myself. I'd like some dark brown eggs and I've a real fondness from brown/partridge birds and blue birds.
My BLRWs are from McMurray. They aren't the best in color. They were SLOW developing and late laying(32-36 weeks). They aren't overly friendly but they aren't flighty. They eat A LOT. Their eggs are small (so far) as well, but they are at least laying in the cold short days. Good luck with all the new birds. -Lynn
My two BLRW pullets are around 6 months and just started to lay a few weeks ago despite frigid maine temperatures already down to 0 degrees. They do have artificial light from 2am to 2pm then the last few hours of natural light. I get about 4 eggs from each of them a week.
Thanks for all feedback! It does appear that the BLRWs are not as prolific as the Welsummers and that I shouldn't expect eggs for at least a brief period during the winter from the Wellies. I only plan to keep a couple of the BLRWs from the hatch, that is if I get two! I'll keep all the Welsummer pullets I get out of it.
Good choice, Cyn! I'll be adding Welsummers to my repertoire in the Spring. I had some and they were gorgeous, but they all got eaten when my coop got ripped apart, so I'm starting over again. They were from Christie and I was very happy with them.
Ok, now I can't wait to get them! That will round out my egg colors except white and I really don't necessarily want white eggs. I'll have all shades of cream, tan, speckled, plus blue-green and now chocolate/terra cotta brown to boot. Sounds wonderful to me.
