Hi,
I'm considering ordering a couple started pullets and ran across this breed. I was wondering if you could give me some insight on this breed regarding temperament, egg laying and hardiness. Does it do well in hot climates? I'm in Florida. How does it do with other breeds? I have 6-7 week old pullets now of other breeds. I can't wait to have my first egg. Wondering if I could let these free range if they are Predator savvy. Thanks in advance!

I am not sure about welsummers specifically, but I’m just commenting to warn you a bit on buying started pullets. If you want your birds to be friendly pets, don’t buy started pullets. They’re always a bit flighty and whackadoodle. However, if you don’t care about temperament then go right ahead! Welsummer eggs are beautiful!!

I had a couple welsummer hens and they were great. They seem to be hot and cold hardy (Wyoming weather, so maybe not that helpful to you). They do fine with the other chicken breeds, they are usually in the middle of the pecking order. They live with my mom’s flock now and have done well free ranging. Mom does have a rooster though, so he keeps an eye out for predators and the hens go about their business.

OH wow, didn't think about them not being as friendly. Good point, I do want my chickens to be friendly and warm towards me. I have to learn patience, I can't wait to have them start laying. Lol

I’m sure people have had experiences in which the started hens come from a small friendly backyard setting, but if they’re coming from a hatchery they may never truly be lovey birds. Waiting for the first egg is so annoying and long!! Lol I feel ya!

I love my Welsummers. Calm, friendly, a bit un-athletic, though.... so maybe not the hen to survive a predator attack. Nice big speckled eggs. Some can be really dark, or have cool blotches and swirls. Love them.

I absolutely LOVE Welsummers! The only reason I don't have any right now is that I don't have room for them! I highly recommend them. Docile, sweet, friendly and safe with children.

LizzyJo -Totally agree with you.
And alot of started pullets are debeaked which IMHO I think is just completely cruel.
