So my 11 week old chicks didn't get let out of the coop today until after church, we were running late and I didn't want to get pine shavings on my clothes before I left. When I opened the door one of them was dead:-( This same one had been acting strangely outside in the run yesterday. It was kind of just standing off to itself with its eyes closed like it was falling asleep while the others ran and pekced around. I mentioned to my husand that it wasn't acting right, and he had my son bring him the chick, and after a brief inspection declared it to be okay, so I went back about what I had been doing not giving it much more thought.
Today when I went to let them out and told him that one was dead, he said it seemed okay when my son brought it to him and THEN and ONLY then mentioned that the feathers around the neck seemed a little strange yesterday and there might have been some scabbing going on. Great....... So now I'm thinking was he being pecked to death? He didn't mention this until after my son buried him, so it was too late to take a closer look (I'm not willing to dig it back up to look). This chick was the only one I wasn't totally convinced on the gender of, it looked like a rooster for the most part, but acted more like the pullets. I'm wondering if it was indeed a he and just the lowest chick in the pecking order and was getting picked on by the rest? I never witnessed any pecking behavior.
I am concerned that I have a new group of 3 week olds that I'm hoping to integrate to the coop soon, if they were indeed pecking till the end, is this a behavior they will repeat by singling out the weakest one? Or is it possible that he caught some disease? That worries me too because I had the little babies out in the run with them on Saturday:-(
LOL, won't let me edit the title, I guess I was still upset a little after finding the dead chick. It should read:
