Went to a meat processor today

Thanks for all of the replies, everyone. Scott, I appreciate you giving that lengthy response and another look at a processing house.

They likely did stun the pig first, but I didn't see that part. I saw the tail end of them hanging him and then I watched the guy move the pig over a large bucket where he put a knife in one side of the throat and waited a bit and then did the other. It was a lot of blood. The pig moved a small amount, and I couldn't tell whether or not it was because he was stunned first or if the blood was just rushing to his head and made him out of it. I don't know. Either way, not something I'd run and watch again.

We're going to brine two chickens tonight. The other two are in the freezer. I'll let you guys know how they come out.

Wow itsy! What an eventful day! Pigs, chickens and sheep...oh my!

I would've definitely passed on the wool too. I am sure most slaughtering places are very similiar to what you described, but the one point really stuck out...on people bringing their chickens with possible diseases...if they're not santizing between flocks, that would definitely concern me. Then again, I've never been to a farm like that, and maybe the way they did things is quite the norm. Regardless, I'm so glad you got more of your birds in the freezer

and, you had a learning experience at that!
