Went to the Auction and my DH bought Quail...what do I do????

I beg to differ! Speaking solely for Nutrena (Medicated) Quail & Turkey Starter (30% protein), I raise hundreds of Bobs each year and the first bite of food they get right out of the bator is this feed, and they don't get anything except that for the fist 12 weeks of their life. Short of some super-dooper steroid, I couldn't imagine a feed that would make the grow any quicker, and be any healthier. And a fact about another "medicataed feed" myth: It does not cause sterility! I hach living proof yearly, and with very good hatch rates I might add.
If It makes any difference, I have known Randall and his set up for a few years now. Hes tell'n it true... In lot of the nation medicated game bird feed is all that can be had. Where pheasant is the top game bird raised, the distributors only carry the medicated feed. Randall has used it for years and while some may be as good, none raise better bobs as he... Bill

Bill, to give this person the benifit of the doubt, when I re-read his/her post this morning, he/she may be talking about regular "chicken" chick feed. I've never used that stuff, and that may be what he/she is referring to, as I can understand why it's not recommended for quail chicks.

You guys shure make me miss my quail badly. I use to have some and I loved them but I got very ill a few years back and gave away all my animals except my cat cuase I feel that if you cant provide your best then you should find them new homes. I would dearly love to get more but all the people I got qauil eggs from back then arnt around or dont have eggs any more. Is it ok to feed non medicated feed for whatever species its for , I tend to be the if its not sick dont medicate it type person after finding out how messed up meds make me feel Id never do it to an animal unless nessary
Thank you .
Ps
OP I think you should get them there own space and there own feed. And then sit back and enjoy they are awsome little guys

Well hello Gabrielle, You said you had quail a while back. What did you have? When folks say quail around here, it's usually coturnix they are talking about. But there are a few of us that don't raise coturnix and lean more toward bobs and the other new world quail these days. Then there's those that are into the pygmy quail...
I was heavy into the coturnix too but got over it... Livin proof that one can be cured! If your look'n for eggs, folks mail'em all over. Just find'n some one with the stock you want... If your about to get back into quail. Try here before eBay, while you may not know who's who here yet, some of us know where your likely to get solid stock from. Ebay seems like its pretty hit and miss as far as eggs go... Some of the " breeders" have less than top quality stock... Some are real good folks...Good luck, Bill

Hi Bill, Yes I had coturnix and button quail. Although I loved the babies and the cuteness of buttons they were little terrors and never got use to me and any time I fed or cleand the cage I had at least one zipp around the room like a mad thing till I could catch it hopeing I could nab it befor my cat could. The others were pretty and fairly docile but didnt seem to do anything but poop and eat lol . I have no experance with any other types of quail. I would like to get some eggs and put together a few trio's ( 1 roo 2 hens ) Just for fun and for eggs to hatch

. I need something that is easy to hatch and nice and sturdy and not super flighty as they would be pets and my son would love to be able to interact with them a little.

Can the chukars be put with the quail? no offense to the quail lovers, but other that watch how darn cute they are...what do I do with them? Do people buy the eggs?

and yes, I was talking medicated Chicken chick starter...I have a boatload of chicken chicks right now...it sure is cute to see the chukars, quail and chicken chicks hanging out together..i know, separate them....DH is building them a space once I figure out exactly what I need.

You can eat both chuckers and quail , they grow fast and provide what I hear is a nice meat in a short amount of time , they do lay eggs that you an eat or sale. I dont know about chucker eggs as much but I know people use to sale quail eggs on here from any where between 5-20 dollers for 12-18 eggs ect but thats fertil eggs so in that case you have to make shure you have males with your females. If you can find a little space for them the eggs and meat are a good food source of protien for you or others in this day and age where food prices are soaring .
