Come to the APA show in Stevenson, WA hosted by the PNPA (Pacific Northwest Poultry Association) the third weekend in October. That is not a state fair show, where you will get many kids and adults pulling birds from the coop or barnyard to show, but a show where a higher percentage of the exhibitors are dedicated hobbyists that are involved in poultry organizations and breed clubs.
I can't recollect any birds at this show that I looked at and thought, "boy, it reminds me of the hatchery bird so and so has." It's truly a feast for the poultry loving eyes/mind. If you do come, please remember to wear clean clothes and shoes you haven't worm around your poultry. Be cognizant that disease can be spread to a show or brought home to a show, so make sure you wash between home and show, show and home poultry contact. It's really a great time!
I am definitely attending with my Silkies and Dewlap Toulouse at the minimum.
