Four month olds can definitely handle scratch. In fact, they'll probably LOVE it! Be careful feeding it, though. They'll go after that instead of their regular feed. Scratch is generally used as a supplement and/or boredom buster, not a full feed.

Yes, it's a supplement (10% or less of the feed they get), not chicken feed with balanced nutrition. If TSC was out of chick feed, you can use All-Flock, or Flock Raiser.

Scratch isn't a complete feed (it's missing additional vitamins and minerals, and may have different nutritional numbers than typical feed, like more fat). Does your bag have a nutrition panel? I'm curious as to why they're saying this is suitable as feed.
Scratch is meant to be a treat, not a complete diet. Feed tiny amounts only. And, they need grit to digest the whole grains in it.

I know a person that feeds only scratch grain to his free range chickens in the summer months and balanced feed in the winter..
that’s not really what it was designed for. They will miss nutrients. If you have a local small farm store they often have their own mash or pellets. Mine is $9 for a 50lb bag of all flock
mine free range for their calcium - they hate oyster shell. Plus there’s a bit of it in the all flock.
What is the protein and calcium percentages here?
