We're not chickens!

My girls were free-ranging a few days ago when we got hit by an afternoon thunderstorm. They made it back to their run but didn't go inside it just when the worst of the rain came down. I thought they were "trapped" against the fence, so in the worst of the storm I went out to "save" them. I took an umbrella, which soon proved worthless as it was flipped inside out, and ran across the barnyard. I approached as calmly as I could (in the driving rain) so they wouldn't panic, used the now worthless umbrella as a herding stick and coaxed them all into the run, where they calmly walked into the coop, fluffed their feathers and waited for the rain to die down. They were back outside as soon as the worst was over.

Omg Patty! they are so wet and unafraid. Sorry you had to run out into the storm. There was a lot of damage in the neighborhood, lots of trees and branches down. Glad they're alright... Just a little wet

Hope you're feeling better.

Hi Betty..

They were sooo beautiful and fluffy today I almost did not recognize them. I had a 102 fever and ran out there in my pajamas after I remembered I left the door shut just minutes before. Yup I found them scratching around, They did not even go in when I opened the door....The whole back area where we have the coops had a good 3 inches of standing water, lots of branches down. It was a truely amazing storm.. I have to admit we really needed that rain but I could have done with out the thunder and lightning strikes

I hope your brood is doing well

Isn't there a song about "Robins in the Rain"? My girls seem to relish rainy days - it brings lots of worms to the surface, and slows things like grasshoppers and moths so that they're easier to catch. Until I had chickens I never really thought about grasshoppers flying, but the things can fly 20 feet in the air!
