My girls were free-ranging a few days ago when we got hit by an afternoon thunderstorm. They made it back to their run but didn't go inside it just when the worst of the rain came down. I thought they were "trapped" against the fence, so in the worst of the storm I went out to "save" them. I took an umbrella, which soon proved worthless as it was flipped inside out, and ran across the barnyard. I approached as calmly as I could (in the driving rain) so they wouldn't panic, used the now worthless umbrella as a herding stick and coaxed them all into the run, where they calmly walked into the coop, fluffed their feathers and waited for the rain to die down. They were back outside as soon as the worst was over.
