We're so cute, but what ARE we? ***PICS***

If you bought them from a farm supply store, no way are they Seramas!

Yeah, I knew that was wishful thinking, lol! But even 9 days in and the chick is still super small! What other bantam breeds have the more erect stance and the chests that stick out? All that comes to mind for me are Seramas, Japs, and maybe Dutch. Or Sebright, but I know a Sebright chick, and this chick is solid yellow, and is NOT feathering in with any lacing at all, and no dark legs either. I think I see a straight comb coming in too.

Flat Chicken Ranch, thank you. I thought Hoot was the Quail Antwerp. From your experience with them, did you like them? Are they gentle? So far Hoot is sweet. And I just love that little owl face and the big eyes. So cute! And the concensus so far is that little DJ is an EE? That would be great, I love EE's! Still no guesses yet on Suzie, Delilah and Gracie though huh? They are feathering in with the most beautiful pastel colors!

Our hen Anna is very sweet and friendly. She doesn't mind being picked up, and often flies up to the cross bar on the fence to visit when people visit the chicken coop. Angus, the rooster, has been an obnoxious little twerp since he was a chick. And he's aggressive, but since he's so small it isn't too much of a problem. Here are their pictures when they were about 3 months old:

Anna lays a really cute little egg almost every day. She was broody for a few weeks last month but we couldn't let her hatch, we're not set up for it. She's back to laying regularly and hanging out in the run now.

Oh, Anna is so pretty! And sorry, but Angus does look like a little twerp, lol. I think it's the look he's giving the camera! That's ok, I have a few brats too! So, was Angus a booger right from when you got him? Caues then maybe there is hope that my little Hoot is a girl, cause the chick is sweet and gentle and has been since I got it. Who knows, maybe this year I lucked out and got more girls than boys. Last year I was a novice and didn't know what I was doing, and I just grabbed whatever I thought was cute, lol. This year I was more selective in my choosing, and I avoided the Sebrights because most of them looked like roos! Of the 8 chicks I got, 7 survived, and I'm hoping most of those 7 are girls. Course, I know that's wishful thinking. I think it would be nice though, if I can figure out what Suzie and Delilah are, if I had a pair, but I'll take 2 pullets cause I can always find a hatchery or breeder later to get a roo from if I really like them. Your Anna is so pretty. I love the big eyes that the Antwerp have, so large and expressive. She is beautiful. Angus, despite the dirty look, is a handsome devil too!

Angus was always a pill, even when his name was still Agnes! Which wasn't long, because he started looking like a rooster after only a few weeks. He was always rushing around the brooder and trying to boss the other chicks around. Here's a picture of Anna and Angus when they were chicks. I think Angus is two weeks older than Anna, and she's only a few days old in this picture.

So that makes him 3 1/2 weeks old, or 4 1/2 at most, and you can see that he's a rooster already! Or maybe I can see it in retrospect, because Anna's comb never developed until she was grown.

I hope your Hoot is a girl, and just as sweet as Anna!

Oh yeah, I can see that he was a roo. Sometimes, with certain breeds, I can tell pretty early on that I have roos, like with my Bantam Cochins. And then there are some breeds that I'm not as good at telling, like with EE's. I have one nasty little chick that I hatched out from some eggs I got from another BYC'er, and I don't like to say hate, but I seriously dislike this chick. I suspect already that it's a roo, even though it's only about 10 days old and the comb isn't really that prominent yet, but this little booger (my daughter named it Claire) immediately goes after your hands the moment you put it in the brooder. It's so super tiny, but it's a brat! I've been taking it out and handling it more in hopes that it will calm down, cause if this aggressive behavior continues, I don't know what to do it. I had plans to sell it along with a whole bunch of other chicks, but no one is going to want to deal with a nasty tempered roo. It's tiny and red, and based on what she had in her Bantam coop, it should have a Silkie father, but the mother could be OEGB, red Cochin, Golden Campine, Silkie, or a few other kinds. Coloring tells me it has a Red Cochin mom, but personality says OEGB. It's solid red like a Red Cochin chick, doesn't have a vaulted head or 5th toe. It's the worst chick in the brooder. I keep threatening him that he's on a one way ticket to cullsville, lol, but I don't have the heart to do that. I don't know if OEGB chicks can be solid red or not. When my internet is working better (it's been acting up ALL day), I will take pictures of "Claire". Looking at your bottom picture though of Anna and Angus as little chicks, I think Hoot looks more like Anna than Angus. Hoot's probably about 12 days old now and still has no comb, so I'm holding out hope! I'm still trying to figure out what Suzie, Delilah, and Gracie are. They are turning out so pretty, but I have no idea what they are!
