Edit: We have sent one quail and our rooster for a necroscopy. Upon further inspection of all the birds today, some of the quail have mildly uplifted scales and damaged tissue on their legs. Possibly mites, though we haven't seen any and I went through our chickens' feathers. We used Diatomaceous earth and used a plant puffer to apply large quantities to each bird and returned them to their crate after cleaning. Tomorrow morning we are applying "Neutral Q," to their crates.

Does this sound like mites? Another possibility is worms it seems so we have Wazine that I applied to their water this evening. I read that garlic powder apparently deters mites, has anyone tried that? Also, petroleum jelly or oils on their legs. I will try all of this tomorrow. Anything else that worked?

Thank you!!!!

We started worrying when pretty much all of our quail died within a month (they are bobwhites and are 2 years old, so while it could be old age, we worried about west nile virus from infected mosquitos). I had lost one of my female silver pheasants a few weeks before that and we didn't know why, she was only a little over a year old.

I have preserved a quail from yesterday for an autopsy to be done today to be sure. However I also went out this morning to check on everyone and one of our roosters is dead. He was eating and flying up onto his perch yesterday and even crowing. Everyone looks healthy, they all eat and drink water, they have shade and are under our oak trees. The quail are in an aviary with my pheasants. The chickens are in 2 pens next to each other, but separated from the quail and pheasants.

One of our roosters who has always been a little messy was laying down yesterday and wouldn't stand up until I put some food right next to him and only stood after eating a bit. His crow sounds terrible and weak. I'm worried he's sick now.

We have used a plant puffer to place diatomaceous earth (edible, food grade) in all of the enclosures and all around, in the dirt, in the crevices of the wood, everywhere.

These are our pets and I don't know what to do or what they could have. We called a number of vets and had a few ideas, such as sinusitis for which I am going to get aureomycin today. But they show no signs of having sinusitis, no weepy eyes, no nasal or eye discharge.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Thank you,
Koey

Ok, when preserving a bird for necropsy do not freeze them, it will kill the bacteria that they are looking for in case of bacteria infection, keep the bird in a Ziploc type or trash bag in the fridge and get it to the Arg department in two days or less...

Call your Agr Department to see if they want to test blood samples of live birds.

Also I believe that there are no cases of bird flu in the US at this time.

Good Luck.

Thank you, I do have the quail in a ziploc bag in the refrigerator, not the freezer.

I will ask about bringing in a live bird. Thank you!!

Updated, we believe they may have mites. Anything anyone knows about mites and what I can do to protect our birds?

Thank you,
Koey
