A Westmont man gets in trouble for keeping chickens outside his home — and ends up at Camden County Jail. That's something to squawk about.

Except the full story’s not so simple. In fact, if you're looking for villains here, you may have to settle for some noisy roosters.

This saga begins in June, when Loc Tran, a 46-year-old gardener, bought about 30 chicks to keep at his Buckner Avenue home. The birds reminded Tran, who came to this country in 1980, of a family farm from his childhood in Vietnam.

As the birds matured, two roosters began to crow at sunrise. In Tran’s view, this was not an awful thing.

"You can hear PATCO running at 5:30 in the morning here. You can hear airplanes," he said. “I thought it was charming.”

But someone complained to Haddon Township officials, and Tran learned he had run afoul of a local ordinance barring farm animals from homes. In other words, cock-a-doodle-don’t.
