Wet Feed

I mistakenly bought layer "pellets" this last time instead of asking for crumbles and my chickens would not eat it. At first I was bringing it in and grinding it in blender but that only turned it to dust. So, I tried putting a scoop of the whole pellets in their feeding pan and adding a little water and whata-ya-no - they loved it!!! The come running to eat the wet pellets. I only put out what they will eat at that meal. I've also discovered that it's a good way to get rid of all of the powdery remains of food that accumulates in the bottom of their feeding pan. Same thing, just add a little water, stir and they love it. They also love wetted down dry cat food - or dry, dry cat food for that matter.

Well, now that I think about it, mine love just about everything. They come running in from wherever they are free ranging to see what's in my bag of goodies. They can be in the woods but they hear that back door and here they come. Funny to watch them waddling/running/flying to get to me and that bag of treats. You'd think I was starving the poor little piggies.

Mine also love wet feed. One would also think I was starving mine. I cleaned out the feeder the other day and even tho I let it go completely dry between feedings and then usually rinse it with the hose, I found mold growing up in the corner of the covered part, so took it off and washed it well. They acted very concerned when I took that feeder off.

They will holler midafternoon if they run out too, and boy howdy you better get your butt out there. They really are silly.

I give my girls wet food once or twice a week. I make up a mixture to give them a little boost. I start with regular chicken crumbles mixed half and half with wild bird seed. Then I wet it with vitamin/electrolyte water and a little olive oil for feather shine. I then mix in the goodies - sometimes thawed out frozen green peas, or mixed veggies - sometimes it is cooked rice. they go crazy over it. I feed them this treat late in the afternoon and I only make enough for them to eat at that time. I never leave wet food down overnight because it will draw ants and mold in this Florida heat. But in their coops they get dry food only. I have their feeder hanging and it really helps with the waste and keeping dirt out of it.

Sometimes I soak dry cat food and put it in the mixture I talked about in the previous post, they really like that. But I have never tried using canned cat food. Has anyone else tried that?

My girls just bill out LOTS of food on to the ground and I just hate to see it go to waste. And so I lightly wet the ground with the water hose, hoping that they will scoop them up. But what I really need is a new feeder that does not allow much billing out. Any idea?
