Wet straw in the run

Wonders why the tarp?
Coarse wood chippings are the best run bedding, IMO.

The tarp has kept all instances of mud away.

Hah you are right!! I'll have to check under it. The chickens have scratched at it but haven't done damage. It's older so it's not water tight. Some sticks under it poked through in a couple spots. But I've been meaning to remove it and see how things go with just dirt and straw on top.

Maybe I should put some sand down on the dirt for some additional drainage.

I would look at using some other flooring instead of the straw, personally.
Hemp works particularly well and is much more absorbent!

Is drainage a problem in the area?
Sand might be ok if you live in a desert....but poops won't break down and decompose in sand.
