We've created lil monsters...

I started letting our chickens free range in the afternoons for the past 3 days, which they love. Yesterday when Dh went to fill their water he said they all came running and ran him over to get out of the gate,

there was nothing he could do so he let em stay out.... I told him you got to be slick going in and out of the chicken run now cause they want to be free

Dont know if I want them to free range all day, kind of scared. They've done really good the past 3 days and go back in the run/coop area nicely around 8ish, we have to help acouple of em find their way. Yesterday evening a bunch of em were hanging out with Dh and I in our small garden... some were dust bathing, others were finding bugs... our lil bantam roo was following Dh cause he would find bugs, ants and big grubs for him... it was cute.

They come arunning when they see you with a bucket, lol even if its not for them.

I never thought I"d like chickens, ours started out as a 4-H project for my daughter, but I love them. I set and watch them all the time.

Just went to your blog to see the pics. Question: Do you think Sally Sue is a 'mean lil' roo' because he is a boy named Sue? LOL. Just a thought

Nice pictures. i had a roo that looked similar to Sally Sue 'cept he wasn't mean. He was the sweetest little roo; even disciplined the bigger roos and made them behave as gentlemen around the hens. I had rescued him from the neighbor next door (they got rid of all their hens and he was left behind cause they couldn't catch him). I had him for 6 years or so until a hawk had him for dinner. Broke my heart.

Ours free range all day too, we currently are coopless. They come inside to a spot in the basement for bedtime, its adorable how they pester us around 7 p.m. to let them in and single file down the basement stairs to their little perches. (we do a daily coopcare routine with cedar chips every morning after they go back outside to range)

We lucked out with a carpenter who's built a shed for us and now wants to convert a cement slab to a fenced area for his "chicken garden" idea. May be done by this fall. If we're not home, they need to be put away so dogs don't chase them, so it will be really nice to have an area fenced just for them.

When we are home, they hang around with us. Its very easy to lock them up if we have to leave, we just call them and they come in. I bet they understand everything; three times dogs have chased them in the past year. (We're finally in the process of putting up a fence.) They are so enjoyable to hang with in the garden, it would almost be a shame to keep them separated from us in a coop. I wish you luck!

lol... I hear that alot

we thought he was a she as a chick and the name just stuck... he likes to go after your feet, he LOVES to go after our 10 year old son, he will chase him and Ds10 is scared of him, its really funny! Sally Sue will fly up and sit on my shoulder and last night he jumped up and sat on my lap... now that was sweet

LOL! Our roo will play a game of "evil foot" with our youngest, it is hilarious! He will even lift a foot to show Tim what he wants! Tim puts "the evil foot" up in front of Mr Peeps, then the game begins. They run and run after each other, I should put it up on YouTube. Its a riot to see our fuzzy little Roo put on his Fierce Warrior Dragon look, then run "chase me! chase me!"
