My hen, little Red, has been sitting on 15 eggs for a few weeks, I anticipated hatching around Thursday this week. Last night at 8pm there were no chicks and no pips that I noted when I made my last round. I got home from school around noon and saw one chick peeping out from under momma

Upon closer inspection, there appear to be 11 chicks, though little Red is very protective and Im not positive if I saw 3 or 4 remaining eggs, and no idea if they have pipped.

She is... she was of the eggs before they hatched too. She would come out once a day, eat, poop and go right back. I had a hard time watching for pips because she would peck at me if I came to close.

The cross wasnt intentional but they are pretty chicks

. We had an accident with a neighbors dog while we were gone for a weekend, and I was left with 2 out of 14 birds

I have 24 other chicks in the barn right now under a lamp, and 6 in the coop with little red that are about 5.5 wks old.... and an upgraded coop.

Fantastic job - both you and her

Gently slid a small dish of food and one of water next to her - move very slowly, the slower the better and she is less likely to think you are trying to "get" the chicks. She will call the babies to eat and drink - this lets her not worry about getting off the nest too soon.

for the other eggs.
