WH duck not acting right, please help!

Always to much Doom and Gloom on BYC........Ducks are generally very tough.......Usually nothing serious......Some people can scare the pants off of you......Always look for simple fixes before you panic.......

Best of luck....

Cheers!

Gasping can be a sign of asper (or other respiratory issues). Honestly, I would ask at your work if anyone has experience with birds and see if they'll take a look at her. Do you hear any crackling if you listen to her breathing right up to your ear? Do you have a stethoscope so you can listen to her lungs?

Well if you have access to stuff or someone who knows a bit about birds at your work, it would be silly not to take advantage of it.

Sometimes it is bad... someone here just lost a duck last week to botulism...

Thank you so much everyone for the replies. Just as a quick update, she's doing much better. She wasn't eating for 2 days and then just went right back to normal. I noticed the biggest difference after bringing her in for a warm bath. I ended up getting rooster booster and adding it to their water(and will continue to do so) and also bought some VetRx after a friend with a sick Muscovy had recommended it. I only ended up using it once and after that she was already doing so much better. She's now back to 100% her old self.

I still don't understand what happend to cause all that, but it definitely made me think more about having things ready for first-aid. I got packets of electrolytes to keep on hand and now I have the VetRx. I need to get some thing for cleaning wounds too, just in case. Any other suggestions for things to keep around would be great. A stethoscope is a great idea, so I might track one down. Hadn't ever considered it before.

And to answer the previous question, yes, they have water at all times. I just think they were eating too fast for a while there. I started moistening their food every morning to help and they've since calmed down during feeding time.

Instead of buying electrolytes I do as doctors do and put something like a teaspoon of sugar, half tsp, or generous pinch of salt and a squeeze of some sort of citrus juice into water and mix it up together - tastes disgusting but does the job... can't recall the exact amounts but If that's not exact enough, google will help with that I'm sure. I use it for occasional terrible headaches when the seasons change and I'm caught out not drinking like a duck!

I am Glad you're girlies better! Aren't Welsh Harlequins GEORGEOUS! I had done my research and decided to go for Khaki's and then discovered an ad for a breeding pair of WH and that was it. I drove to the other end of the south Island to get them. (A big trip in the kiwi mindset)

We need a thread for WH ducks specifically I think... I have been reading through the Khaki's thread and gleaning as much info as possible there as I have recently had a surrogate hen hatch outthree KC Ducklings...
Show off your Welsh Harlequins - That's what I'll call it. Come join in!
