What’s cluckin?

Welcome to chicken parenthood! Its going to be a fun journey. Your therapist has the right idea, I was diagnosed with PTSD when I was 5 years old when my father was killed in action in afghanistan. I am now 17 and our PTSD's are very very different I'm sure, but I find raising chickens help distract and calm me. I used to not be able to go outside by myself because I was so terrified but now I go outside all the time to see my chickens! I hope your chickens help you too and we are all so thankful for your service! :hugs

I did completely miss the second half that you are still on active duty. I cannot imagine raising chicken at that stage in my life as we were forced to move so often and committed our resources to preserving the integrity of our dogs and cat for those. It was never cheap bringing those guys along with our moves, usually around 1 grand per move the last was in 2013. The expense was the vet passports plus air freight.
I’m at the end of my career now they are setting me up for medical retirement I’m too broken to be an “effective soldier” was their words...but I could still be an instructor and finish out my last 6 years but big army doesn’t see it that way

Medically retired here as well at 14.5 years.
Regardless- It was better trading that paycheck for the VA version where I don't need to deal with personalities on a daily basis!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

Thanks for your service.

Taking care of them and watching them should help with your ptsd.

G’Day from down under Aliasofryan :frow Welcome!

Chickens are great therapy! While I can not even begin to imagine the stress you have been under and things you have been through, I do know that my gals do not fail to put a smile on my face at the end of what might have been a taxing work day.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
