We talk a lot about complete feeds and the important nutrients that hens need, but you may not have thought about the most important nutrient of all: Water!

Providing fresh, clean water each day is essential to keeping a happy and healthy backyard flock. On our farm, every 7 hens drink about 1 gallon of water each day. No matter the season, chickens need fresh, cool water. Without water, birds will not eat. Without food, birds are unable to regulate their body temperatures. If you live in a cold area, consider a heated waterer.

During the summer, be sure to place waterers in the shade. The summer heat makes this element even more important to keep them calm, cool and comfortable.
