Okay! so we’ve had these guys in the incubator for around 18-19 days, they’re currently in lockdown.

a few days before lockdown (16/17? the days seem to blend together for me at the moment- sorry!!) i drew a faint line in pencil where the dark part of the egg was, to see if they would grow past it as i couldn’t tell if they were taking up more of the egg as days went by.

on their last candle, they kinda.. moved back from the line?? it’s bizzare to me, i don’t know if it’s normal, this isn’t my first time hatching eggs but it’s the first time i’ve tried to mark the line, and i’m not too knowledgeable.

Most of the replies here are probably going to be ‘wait and see’ which i agree is probably the best course of action, but these eggs are from a beloved hen of mine who died a few weeks ago, we had 12 but only 3 were fertile and i’m slightly paranoid lol. all i need to know is wether not to get my hopes up i guess?

All of the chicks were moving inside the egg, freakishly, but i’m pretty sure they aren’t dead in the egg right now.
There’s a few pics, they all seem to have this, although on one of them, one side hasn’t moved back at all and is still on the line.

You'll notice a significant drop right around lockdown time. 🙂 No worries, I'm only on my 4th hatch so I'm still learning too.
oh phew, i’m so glad it’s normal! i really want these little ones to have a smooth hatch and i didn’t want to take chances if it meant something bad !!

I’m glad the others were able to put your mind at rest. I’m sorry for the loss of your hen you loved so much. Pretty soon you should have some mini me’s from your hen 👍🙏. Keep us posted I would Iove to see pics when they start to hatch/hatch . Try to be patient

of course! thank you for replying, it means a lot.
ill probably be posting them anyways as she was a sex linked easter egger, and her chicks might be too. not educated at all on the topic of chicken genetics but it’s what i’ve been told and posting them at a day old for peoples opinions can’t hurt :)

Can we see a picture of your hen that passed? I had something similar happen. I had a hen that got killed by a hawk so I hatched the only four eggs she ever laid and got 2 chicks. Unfortunatly they were killed by gnats.

sure thing, these are probably the worst quality photos ever, i need to get into a habit of taking pics of them more often, especially as stuff like this happens all the time, so quickly. i regret not getting better ones so badly. i also have this pic of her as a baby haha.

i think one of the reasons it hits so hard is because she was our only chick of the season, and her death was entirely our fault and preventable (fox attack, they took her, our welsummer charlie, and somehow our big buff orphington roo.) the whole thing has got me so paranoid i have to lock and re lock and re check everything, every coop every door before i leave, every night or i physically can’t sleep. losing them is too hard </3

her name was officially Spore, because her adoptive mom is called Mushroom. although calling her Spore never actually caught on, it was way easier to just call her Baby because of the previously mentioned ‘only chick of the season’ thing. so we called her Baby.
