Hello Fellow Chicken Lovers-

5 days ago I brought my hen in for medical care. Her backside was all full feces. I soaked her butt, removed the poop & trimmed her poop-caked feathers. She is getting stronger— but What is sticking out of the vent?
I gently pulled on it— Thinking it was an obstruction. It doesn’t hurt her- but I think it’s attached??

Please- what is this? I would love some advice. I have her on vitamins/ hydration/ garlic water. She is separate the flock for now.

thank you in advance for the help!!
Theresa

It may still be hardened poop. I would soak her a couple of times a day if she can tolerate it. Apply something like mineral oil, coconut oil or honey to the hardened material to see if that will help soften it. Keep working on getting it loosened up.

Keep her hydrated - plain water should be available too, some birds will not drink water with things added to it, offer some wet feed as well.

Thank you very much!! She is Absolutely dehydrated. I’ll soak her 2 times a day & apply mineral oil. I don’t have mineral oil- could I use coconut oil?
Just like @Wyorp Rock already suggested, you can use coconut oil too. And in addition I would chill some coconut oil and feed her some of the pieces so as to lubrify her from the inside as well.

Yes, you can use coconut oil :)

If she's dehydrated then I would focus on getting fluids into her.
What other symptoms are you seeing? You mention she's weak. Has she had difficulty laying eggs or is she just overall "not well"?
