What’s wrong with my rooster’s foot?

I went to trim my rooster’s (4yr old BYM) spurs and noticed his toe looks really weird. I’ve never seen anything like this before. When I touched the tip of his toe, it was hard like a scab, and bled a little bit. He doesn’t seem like it’s bothering him though, he’s walking fine and acting normal. Any ideas? It’s freaking me out a little.

So, adding on after doing research, I’m pretty sure it’s frostbite. How do I know? Well, the tip of his toe - the part that looks all weird and shrunken - just fell off. I thought I was going to feint at the sight, I still feel pretty woozy. Anyway, I washed it out with iodine and bandaged the stump up with vetwrap, gauze, and neosporin.

Poor guy, I wish I had noticed it sooner but he’s very flighty and hard to even get close to. So I didn’t even notice. At least it doesn’t seem to be bothering him terribly, he was courting hens and crowing within minutes after I bandaged him up.

Yes, that is frostbite on the tips of two toes. There wasn’t anything that you could have done for him earlier. They auto-separate from frostbite, and painting the tips with Betadine is exactly what I would do. He may have gotten his toes wet during freezing weather a month or 6 weeks back. It happens here occasionally. January is the most common month for frostbite here.

His fourth toe has been like that for years, he ripped that nail out during a fight with another rooster and it never grew back right. Which I why I think an injury might have caused the frostbite - if he was bleeding, it’d make his foot wet and susceptible to frostbite. That’s my theory anyway, I’m no expert.

Anyway thank you, I’ll keep it clean with iodine and keep an eye on that fourth toe, it does look a bit swollen. We had a cold snap here a couple of weeks ago, including a lot of snow.

Thank you, he’s doing very well - what’s left of his toe is healing nicely and he’s walking just fine. And yeah, he’s overdue for a spur trim, but the dog-nail-clippers I was using weren’t strong enough to cut through, I have to look for some heavy-duty ones! He’s a really big boy with spurs to match, thankfully they’re not sharp.
