Hi!
One of my drakes Skylar his bill is peeling. It first started off looking like someone had bit his bill and Bruce it so I thought it would heal but this is been going on now for about two months. I will include pictures. Is it a deficiency? Is it keratin deficiency? I have sweet potato how do I prepare that for my ducks? He’s the only one having this problem. He’ll be 30 weeks old tomorrow.
They all eat Country Lane All Flock 16% protein.
Thanks in advance!
Kelly

His bill doesn’t seem to bother him. He hasn’t been rubbing it or messing with it. He lives with another drake Alaska in drake jail they use the same feeder. It is a red chicken feeder I will post a picture.
Thank you!
I posted again I don’t think the other one is there.

Birds, including waterfowl, have beaks/bill majorly composed of keratin, a high-protein material that makes up most of the structural integrity of their bills. Just like our fingernails, over time it can become flaky, so occasionally old keratin falls off and is replaced by newer keratin. The same case is applied with ducks, with even more great emphasis since the birds often are rooting around in mud, roots, rock, etc. So to keep up with a healthy-looking bill, the bird will flake off the keratin layers, just as we do.

In some birds the "severity" of the flaking may vary, In my experience, some birds very rarely show signs of flaking while others show more noticeable flaking. That may be why he is showing more noticeable flaking compared to your other ducks.

Other causes can include a vitamin A deficiency, but that is more rare, and not usually a problem with waterfowl. If you'd like you could try increasing some of the greens in his diet to provide some supplemental vitamin A, but that is your choice. If he is getting grass, weeds outside, that should suffice.
