First, thanks everyone for the hugs and kind thoughts. I was sharing the repsonses on this thread with my kids this evening, and my 9 yr old daughter said "look guys, these people we don't know are hugging us, it's so cool." You folks on this site are great!
On a more serious note, the remaining hens will be locked up tight tonight. In talking to my wonderful neighbor, another hobbist, she and her large dog actually startled 5 coyotes out back last night a little before midnight, sooooo........Shortly I will be talking to someone who specializes in varmit issues, and Messrs Remington and Winchester will be hanging out after darkness falls for a few nights this week.
More than likely if it was coyotes they would have took and ate all of the birds.....if they were dead but laying there it was a dog playing for the kill.
It has been a month now without any additional incidents, the 10 remaining hens are back to normal. I have a small volunteer varmit posse army ready and waiting for the "eradication party" being scheduled next month.
