What?! A WEEK?!

I don't think it's going to be easy. No buisness is easy but it could be fun and I would have help. My landlady's daughter is also involved in this as well as the land lady herself. IT's kind of a group thing.

About the chicken price, I spoke to several farmer markets in the area even the Flea Market. That's the price range that they all told. One guy said he made more then $500 selling his chickens and roos at the flea market on a SINGLE saturday. He said that if you keep them looking good, healthy, well maintain and having good information on them, they can run pretty good. He also said pure breds can also be entered in fairs and the prizes there are pretty good on money (Im leaving that up to the kids. ANything they win, will go to their college savings. Good education for them).

Right now, Im having 10 chicks that Im raising. We are adding more a little at a time. Hubby is working on clearing up the OLD chicken coop behind my house which is right now over grown (hasnt been used for 10 years) and also cleaning up the chicken coop at the land lady's house that is also overgrown.

I know it's goign to take time to get things smooth but Im sure the hard work and time will be rewarding later. Just have to keep your head in the game.

The health issues are what worry me. I have one bad hip and it's pretty difficult for me on some days. If you have others doing the hands-on work, they are going to earn most of the profit.

From looking over your posts I see that you are total newbie to chickens...is that right? I think you would be better served to raise you a few hens and get a feel for what it takes to have them and what the costs are. Then mulitply that by many times and see if you think you can still turn a profit. If you've never had chickens before I'm afraid you don't have any idea how much work and money a large number of chickens can be. As ranchhand said your health issues could become a big stumbling block to your plan.

Landlady's daughter already said she didn't want any parts of the profit but if we do start making profit, Im going to make her take parts of it for whatever she needs, even if it is just spending money for her. She won't be helping out for too long since she is graduating this year from high school and going to be joining the army afterwards. When she graduates, hubby will be also from his college class and then he will be home more to help out.

I can get around, I am the one taking care of the donkey, dogs, and such around here, Just that I have DR orders that I cannot work so it's hopeless trying to get a job with that on ur record.

I don't think I will make MUCH of a profit during this year though. It's going to take time before it's builds up since we are JUST now starting.

Also, hens and roos around here are sold for maybe $25 to $50 per bird depending on what breed (for RIR, which are VERY VERY Popular in this area, they are being sold as adults here for about $45 per bird)

wow, for that kind of money you could sell two and order 25 chicks from a hatchery and pay less per chick. There was a kid on here earlier today who's dad wouldn't pay more than $5 for a laying hen. Either there's a shortage of chickens where you are or there's a very high demand. Those prices amaze me!

as to you not being able to get a job with the health issues "on your record", its against the law for the employers to have access to your health records and I'm not sure how they would even know that information unless you told them.

Just trying to help keep you from "biting off more than you can chew". Nothing takes the fun out a project more quickly than becoming overwhelmed by it.

if I was you and I was DR ordered to not work, then I would be looking into getting on disability. I hope that you can, as we are in a horrible situation ourselves right now and we are just trying to keep our heads above water.

Sounds to me like you know this is risky, you have financial troubles, major health problems, and lots of care-taking responsibilities already, but have chosen to raise chickens anyway. The folks here have lots of chicken experience and are telling you that you won't make money off of it like you have been led to believe. Do you want to risk food on the table or lack of medical care for some chickens? I hope you defy the odds and get rich. I haven't seen any books called " Get Rich on Chickens". And I have spent much more money than I anticipated so far, and my 6 chicks are only 5 weeks old.
Around here people sell chickens for about $5. More like $15 tops for fancier breeds. The numbers you quoted do not ring true to me. Just look what this guy is "making" on selling chicks to you.
If you are just looking for support on this site, I am sorry for not giving it better, but I cannot see putting chickens before the basic needs of your family.
I wish you well whatever you decide to do.

I am on disability but it isn't much. Im also trying to get SSi for my daughters since they are hearing impaired also but still a pending case (for the last 5 months!).

As for biting more then I can chew. Believe me, I have been thinking that as well but I don't want to think negative too much.

I might be new at this but I do think I can do it. I have all of you to come to if I have any questions. My landlady used to raise and sell chickens for a living as well (she had 10 coops with 10 chickens each coop and her bator was NEVER off nor EMPTY!) so if there is something Im stuck on, I also have her.

Im keeping my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Whoa, for one thing, Im not putting this first before my family. The chickens also provide for the family also, food as in meaning. Also No one ever said that it can't happen, they are just saying it won't be easy. Your post has alot of negatives, why not put in a few positives? Someone with a mind like that, maybe it won't work out. I don't expect to get RICH out of this, just enough to help provide fiancially.

Nothing about any type of buisness is easy to do. You have to work at it to make it work. I always had a saying "Never ever let anyone stop you from doing something you set your mind for"

Anything is possible.
