We are new to chicken keeping but have been around other people's chicken a lot in the past. This Spring we bought 6 straight run chicks from TSC. We have had so much fun raising them. We could only keep 2, a friend took the other 4. We live on the outskirts of a small suburb in the Lehigh Valley PA. We have had all kinds of pets in the past. Currently 3 dogs and 2 chickens. The chickens have provided a lot of entertainment! We kept what everyone assured us were the 2 Plymouth Barred Rock Hens. I had the window open this morning, now I'm not so sure they are hens...any thoughts?



They are 12 weeks old. The one on the right is my sun Welcomer in the morning. That is the only time it is vocal so far. From the comb I'm thinking roo. I just can't figure out the one on the left.

Good morning corgi and welcome to BYC! I am not real sure but I think they are both pullets. I believe the cockerels are lighter in color.

Welcome! They are gorgeous. I would love to add a Plymouth barred rock hen to my flock some day! So beautiful. Are they friendly?

I would like to say the smaller one is a girl but, I don't know the breed at all. If you have a crower, that can inhibit the other one from crowing . So you may have two roos. Try posting the photos at "what breed or gender is this." they may have different opinions. Glad you joined the Backyard chickens flock -we do think it is a "wonderful corner," of the chicken world. Thank you for saying it.

Agreed with Kelsie - at 12 weeks, the comb and wattle growth and, moreover, color, indicate cockerels.
