If it is open enough not to get to hot in the summer (chickens are pretty heat-sensitive), and if you insulate it enough to prevent condensation/humidity problems in wintertime if you live in a cold climate, and if you can predatorproof it, then sure
You can . There is a roof materail that is made for that .It can be painted on all over and it redirects the heat and helps with the winter cold. You can buy it at lowes or home depot .. show pics of your shed ,so we can see it .
M chicken house is made out of old tin standing off the ground about three feet with a wire bottom so the poop falls through to the ground. The holes in the tin plus the bottom works as vents but it is not drafty. Over half of our coop was built with recyled building materials.
This is good news. I would post a pic but I don't have the shed yet. I am still working on the addition plans. My existing coop is wood and this would be metal. Chickeydee, I was wondering if you knew what that roof material that you can paint over is called?

I think it is called cool coat ,but if you go to lowes and go to the roofing section it comes in a 5 gallon can . They should know .It is for tin roofs ,but you can also paint the sides too.

The name of it is Koolseal. It is for trailer roofs when they are rusty or leaky. New galvanized steel sheeting would need no such thing. Old rusty stuff could benefit from it. Be certain to design lots of full time ventilation up high, well above roosts. This will help to keep interior dry and healthy. I did 1 sq ft for each 4 chooks. That is in addition to 4 windows, 2 pop doors, and the entrance. Roof mounted turbine vents are great for year-round ventilation. I can shut my coop up tight overnight, and my overhead ventilation will keep the interior dry no matter what the weather is. Another thing is to water outside only. That also reduces the chance of humidity/sweating interiors. 3rd thing is to scrape poop boards daily.
That will help by removing not only ammonia and methane gas, but also the humidity from the poop. Makes the litter last far longer too and you rarely have to pay attention to the floor litter regards cleaning. I just walk thru it with my knee-boots and track it out to where I can wipe them off in the grass outside the run.
