Right now, my ducklings are just over two weeks old, and I have them on towels which I replace a few times a day. Before anyone tells me about pine shavings, I know about pine shavings, and they are going to have them ONCE THEY STOP EATING THEM.
Ahem.
I would rather not have them ingest wood and resin right now. I figure in another week we will try again.
Meanwhile, it doesn't seem so awful to roll up towels, shake them out in the garden, rinse them quickly, and pop them into the washer once every day or two.
Once they are grown, I will find out how often the shavings need to be changed. My shelter and pen design have the water and food out in the pen area, so they won't have access to food and water overnight as adults. That should help keep the bedding and shelter in decent shape. I also have a compost pile about 20 feet away, so I can move the shavings pretty easily to that spot.
