What age is a chicken considered to be pretty much fully grown?

She is very pretty, did they intentionally breed out the feathered feet/shanks?? Is she black tailed buff??Ive never seen one that age...very pretty : ) My marans laid late, around 24 weeks(ok late for me lol)-I wouldnt really say shes coppery...I think her coloring is perfect...
However I would give my left toe for a wheaten marans : P

I'm not sure at what age they are considered fully grown...however....what I noticed with mine, that are almost a year old...is that my Buff Orp definitely looked full grown after she went through a molt and fully feathered out again (only two of them molted the first year). So, maybe a year? That's when you get to officially call them "hens."

I was told that pullets usually start to lay at or around 28 weeks. Keep in mind that my only experience is with large fowl.. Buff Orpingtons are my only grown birds (I shall not.. even under fear of torture..say how many different breeds of chicks I have..oldest are 14 weeks).. my thoughts are this... in the animal kingdom, if you are old enough to reproduce - in the case of a chicken - lay an egg.. I consider you grown. Maybe a YOUNG grown.. but grown none the less. Your pullet is very pretty. If you get tired of waiting for eggs, just drive down here to GA and I'll be happy to give her a home..

Mine continued to "mature" and change body shape and weight through first molt (18 months), though it becomes less pronounced after, say, a year. Oh, but to answer your question, from what I understand of Marans, the are slow to mature.

I go by their leg color... Marans typically have a light pink/white leg... Especially when I am looking at a barred rock, dominique, and cuckoo... Talking about a mix up.

I'd say that at a year they are like a 16-18yr old person. pretty much fully grown as far as bone structure but may still fill out body wise.

By the way I'm totally confused by the talk about feathered feed and marans. I have a coocoo maran from my pet chicken and it's black and white. The only feathers on her feet are the ones she walks on in the run.
