I have a flock 5 month old hens that have been laying up a storm for 3 weeks now and the roo has been taking care of rooster business with them. I was wondering what age the hens have to be to produce eggs that are capable of hatching chicks? I am asking because a friend of mine has asked me if I could raise him some chicks. This is my first time hatching chicks from my own flock and have no idea if the hens are too young or not.

There not to young, I usually will not hatch until they have been laying for a month (remember small eggs, small chicks) Good luck!

Thanks for the information. Did know about the small egg small chick. About half of the hens are laying full sized eggs, the rest are still laying golf balls.
