what age to put outside....

ok. I have Texas AM and Jumbo. What age can they go out side. I am new to quail so I am not sure. The AM's are about 3 weeks old or so. they are in the house with no light. I put my chicks outside at two -3 weeks with no problem, but these are my beginning stock and do not want to take a chance. How cold hardy are they. It is in the 50's at night 70's in the days.

My guess would be about 6 weeks old. Will they have a heat lamp?

No heat lamp.. I was told 6 weeks but they lay at 6 weeks so i thought they could out sooner. Please tell me not so....They eat like crazy and the other end stinks.........I thought they were cold hardy.

Well being in FL it doesn't get all that cold at night there right? I'm in WI so it's a lot different here so hopefully someone who lives in the southern states will chime in and give you better info. Although THIS year I hear you have had crazy cool weather too, IMO I would wait a little longer then 3 weeks but that's just my opinion.
If you have a bunch of them they can probably huddle to stay warm too so they will most likely be ok. What sort of coop are they in? Can they get in somewhere and stay warm? How many do you have together?

If you leave the light in their grow out pen and change to a regular incandescent bulb at 6 wks of age they will start to produce eggs shortly thereafter...


A few caveats= do not allow them to get wet/ rained on at this age--- they will get hypothermic and die( even in late spring early summer when we're up in the 90's...)

Cold hardy is a subjective thing! they live in Florida with you! They will grow up to think that 30 is brutal cold just as you and I do.... While coturnix born and rased in new york would think 85 is "SO hot it's the end of days!" If you understand my meaning?
