I've been on for about 2 months now and it is certainly a life saver (literally) at times. I have a chick now with a slipped tendon and there's nothing I can do for him. I've tried all of the tricks and post I've found on here. With the skin torn now from him hobbling on it, I don't know how long he'll make it. I did find a post that said to put a make shift cast on it and he is hopping along on one foot. He is in the house in the brooder with 2 other friends so he's not lonely. He seems happy until I touch him. He's a week old today. This is the only bad part about having chicks so far that I've come across. Knowing when and having the heart to cull when it's time. I can't do it. Sorry to be sounding sad at your happy time. You'll find a lot of help on here and a lot of people willing to help.

If you have a hen who is sleeping on the nest and won't get off for most of the day and growls and screams when you get near... you probably have a broody hen. If you have a rooster 5 months old or older, you probably have fertile eggs. Wait till dark, put some eggs under her, wait 3 weeks and see. At the worst, your out a few eggs.

Thank you. And you keep me posted also. Good luck. I can't wait to hear from you to see if you have babies or not!

You know, the slightly sticky substance on the shell of a freshly lain egg is called the 'bloom'. if your egg is completely clean and unsoiled, it's best to leave the bloom on and not wash it. That way, the egg will last longer and taste better. I have the times of my hens down to the last minute almost, so I'm usually there to catch it as it drops out. NO KIDDING!
