My local feed store gets their chicks from primarily Ideal and Cackle. They had this little chick mixed in with the Speckled Sussex. I thought she was so cute I had to bring her a two friends home. I know she's not a speckled susses, but I just can't seem to find what breed she is or if is actually is a she or a he.

What makes you think it is not a SS? I can't find any pics of mine at that age, but I do remember they had more white feathers than I expected. They also have very small combs - I can't see from the pic what kind of comb your chickie has.

Isn't "what's the breed" a fun game? I'm tempted to get a mystery mix from a hatchery next year so I can play too.

Feathering looks ss, but the yellow legs do not, could just be hatchery quality. I did get some from mm a few years ago and they all had white legs.

I totally missed the leg colour. ha. Our ss chicks had light yellow legs that turned to almost white as they aged. For the first few weeks, that was the only way to tell them apart from the welsummers.

Thank you for the responses. I got two of the SS with her/him and they have a single comb. This one looks like it'll have a pea comb or rose comb.

After looking at the pictures of game birds I think ve is right. When this bird stands up she stands erect, with he neck stretched out and her head looking out over the others. This is how I spotted her in the middle of a cage of about 20+ chicks.

Now, I just have to wait and see if she truly is a she.

Thank you.
