Okay thanks, guess I'm just being picky. The coop doesn't really smell or anything.

Im so picky its not even funny lol...I clean sweep my entire coop out once weekly and replace with half a bag of shavings and vaccume the walls, window and ceiling...cant stand when it looks dirty and dusty.
I agree with you to a degree.I have a small set up of about 30 chickens. If all I had to do was extra work on the dainties that are put in some coops that would be nice.I'm just saying that chickens are a dirty bird and that you create the work that you want to put in them.I do the deep liter method and It works for me.You said that you tried it before, but it appears that you weren't doing something right. It is a natural thing for chickens to go to the bathroom and they go where they want.If it stunk and got moldy you weren't taking care of it properly. With the furniture and such in the coops that means that you have that much more to stink, get dusty, and have to clean.Good luck to you.If it works for you,go for itTrooper - everyone has chickens for different reasons! I plan to keep my coop reasonably clean and am going to use sand so I can easily scoop out the worst of it on a daily or at least several times weekly basis. I also plan to do whatever I can to keep the dust at a minimum due to my allergies, realizing, of course, that there's no way to keep it from being dusty--but some setups are worse than others. There's not anything wrong with people with smaller flocks making their coops cute and keeping them clean. I can see how it wouldn't work for a giant poultry operation but most people here have a smaller group (small in chicken math numbers, of course).![]()
I think some of the coops with little furniture are adorable, lol. Mine is going to be far more utilitarian, but still as clean as possible with decorative touches!
I used the deep litter method when I had chickens years back and I thought it was disgusting. It stunk and got moldy. Hopefully I'll find sand more agreeable.
