What am I!??!

Your instinct is correct, you have two Cuckoo Marans. I suspect the first one will develop male, but it's very early to be accurate.

You can tell that they are not Barred Rocks or Dominiques because of the color of their legs. Those breeds should have yellow legs, not the delicate pink that your Maran babies have.

Hope that helps!

I hope he isnt a boy! I will have to find him another home as my DH says. They are supposed to be all girls... grr, but the bigger one is a few weeks older than the other one. Oh well I will get neat looking eggs from them.

Here are my SLW and my Cuckoo Marans when they were about 6 weeks old. We were sure my CM was a girl because of her darker color. I guess the boys have more white? I'm not an expert but that is what I was told. Both are now 5 months old hens

Henrietta the CM is facing front and you can see Ivy the SLW behind her.

Here is Ivy the SLW for comparison.

Oh, here's Henrietta when she was the same age as yours. It was right after we got the chicks from the feed store. I think she was 2 weeks old. Sorry the focus isn't that good.

It's ok, Marans lay really beautiful eggs. The next time you go for Wyandottes, look for a chick with a hilariously messy looking face that looks like Zorro on a bad day. It's a dead giveaway from day one for them.

Yes I will have too. The marans make such a cute sound right now. Very different from the other ladies. My next worry is that my Cochin mix is a bantam and not a full size...
