what an odd egg

My new layers have layed soft shells that had a little tail - and even a couple like Genie described with two attached - but they have never laid on like THAT

Wow - I hope your hen is ok. Hopefully, she'll start laying again soon and this was just a fluke.
 
One time in their lives or another birds will have these, it can be a sign of deficency in calcium or just one of those things that happen.
I had my favorite bird die from one of these and you cannot believe how fragile these lives are. Nothing you can do, except be grateful when she greets you at the door in the morning.
I have never, until my Penny, heard of a life and death situation with a leathery egg.
Please, I don't mean to scare you.
