When I lived out in the country, I raised 40 English Sussex at a time. When I could sex them (which is pretty easy, when you get the hang of it), I traded half for RIR and Barred Rocks (obviously my favorite)... I sold the remainder to interested folks (State Farmer's Bulletin), and kept a total of 12.
When the were old enough to lay, it was an interesting hierarchy. The Barred Rocks were in charge (Princess and her ladies in waiting), The RIR were the Noble ladies, and the English Sussex were the Serfs!
