What are guineas good for?

"were the ticks going to pick the kid up and carry her away, like a colony of ants?"

They do that in Missouri.

Guineas are great with ticks. And enertainment as well as annoying the dog!

Ours won't let the UPS guy leave!!! He always has to come get someone so he can leave. It's sooooo funny!!! Oh and all joggers beware!!! I have been working in the yard to look up at a jogger really running in front of our house and I thought, I wonder why he's running so fast? Then I got the answer, he was being followed by my flock of guineas.

Thanks for the heads-up - I will deffo have to re-think that. (Sad now)

Maybe your neighbors would like some guineas too !!! Get them hooked here on BYC !!!

I got guineas for the ticks, I had gotten Lyme disease REAL bad. They are very comical, difficult birds. The tick problem was under control, but there's always that ONE neighbor.
I put up a fence to keep them out of his yard, and ALL the OTHER neighbors complained about having ticks again!
So I ordered more guineas for one of the GOOD neighbors, and he lets them free range and everyone is happy.
Except for the first neighbor. But when he complains, "sorry, they aren't mine" HAH payback!

Ticks are a very serious thing. My Grandpa died because of a tick bite.

So no one has tick eating chickens?

I was actually thinking about eventually getting guineas because of ticks (and their gorgeous looks - seriously!). I would love to have a house with woods even though I hate bugs and hate ticks. I was wondering if chickens could do double duty, though...

and eggs. because I eat lots and lots of eggs, and having a variety is interesting.

I was curious about this... How do guinea eggs taste? Do they last as long as chicken or duck eggs? I have bantams; aren't guinea eggs about the same size?
