What are magpies like?

I've found someone local who will sell me magpie ducklings this spring. They are certainly a visually appealing breed, but my research into their nature is turning up a lot of contradictions. Some things I read say they love to swim, others say they are a breed who can take it or leave it, some say they are friendly, others say they are nervous and high-strung. SOme say they are great with kids, others say they aren't. I guess there really is just that much variation in the breed? Maybe especially given the challenges to breed show-worthy ones?

What have folks here noticed about magpies?

Thanks!

I have a magpie drake. He is very laid back and friendly. He loves his baby pool! He is much friendlier than the three muscovies I have.

My Magpies seem just like any other domestic duck. They like to be around you, just not too close. Mine lay huge eggs - bigger than my Pekins.
