Cochins and brahmas? Nooo sonny boy.... I thought my roo was a light brahma for some time. Then I noticed he had a single comb and wasn't as fat and as big as other brahma roos. Then I figured maybe he's a Delaware. Not that either, my roo has feathered legs as Delawares do not. Maybe he's a Columbian Cochin? I googled that and they look a bit small to be my boy. Plus they're feathers were big and made em' look bigger, my roo doesn't have poofy/humongous feathers.
How do you post pics? Not a link, like so you can actually see the pic on the page.
I think nhnanna was suggesting docile chickens FOR you...not suggesting what you might have. And as far as docile...they are indeed. Every chicken needs to be handled...repeatedly to build a trust. And if you want more of a pet...well all that handling will pay off.
If you are looking for docile breeds...these will work:
Brahmas
Cochins
Buff Orpingtons
NH Reds
Ameraucanas
Silkies
Langshans
Jersey Giants
Welsummers
Salmon Faverolles
Marans
I personally have roosters that are Marans, Welsummers, Jersey Giants, Salmon Faverolles, variety of Ameraucanas, and Silkies. I can hold each one of them and they treat me with respect when I'm in the pen with them! The Jersey Giant is a wonderful provider/protector for his girls. And even with his size, he is sweet and gentle. I would not recommend a bantam cochin if you have large fowl hens.
As far as your rooster being selfish with your girls...he may not have taken the role of "leader" yet. How long have you had him? Maybe give him some time...especially if you have a dominant hen(s). You might just have a backyard mix rooster that could be from docile breeds that wasn't handled prior to living with you. Or, he might be a mix of ill-tempered roosters. Post a pic...I bet people can give you a guess or two on what you have. Also, work with him a little more...he may become the best rooster you've ever had. And if that doesn't work out, he might become the best soup you've ever had. It won't hurt to work with him a bit. Did you figure out how to post pictures yet?
