What are the causes of a nasty poopy bottom?

I have a couple chickens that their bottoms are so nasty and disgusting and caked on I don't even want to pick them up. What are some causes of this and how do I fix it? Thanks!

I have the same problem with one of my red sex link hens, she's two years old. She seems uninterested in food -- looks otherwise healthy, but feels thin around the breastbone. How do I fix her up?

hens. they've been this way for a year but I can't figure out what is going on.

I have a 1 year old production red hen that also has poopy bum sometimes. She hasn't had it lately. Normally all I do is wet several warm paper towels and losen the poop, then trim the feathers around her vent. I'm not sure what causes it though.

The cause is when wet poop gets tuck on the feathers around her butt and builds up. You'll want to soak her in warm water for a while to loosen the poop. Then, I'd take a brush (any kind, medium softness bristles and scrape it off. Last, pour a bit of warm water over what you've cleaned to wash some away then let her dry out in the sun. (or use a blowdrier if you have one)

Your red hen may not be eating well because her digestive system will block up if you don't get the poop out so I'd get it off asap!

I know this is an older thread...but I need some help with this issue. I recently started with chicks. All are doing great and are about a week old. One of my buff orphingtons has a very bad mess on its bottom. I tried to wipe it clean and pull it off. When I did this I see her bottom side bulging a little and seems a little red and irritated. It seems to be singled out of the other chicks I have as well. Im not sure what to do...can someone help?

Sounds like she may have pasty butt. A commonly know thing that mainly happens to chicks. you should trim some of the feathers around her vent (butt) and check on her a couple times a day. Give her electrolytes to help the pasty butt go away. To help her butt not be so red and irritated after you wipe her butt of daily hold a warm rag or cloth on her vent for a minute or too.
