I have a couple chickens that their bottoms are so nasty and disgusting and caked on I don't even want to pick them up. What are some causes of this and how do I fix it? Thanks!

I have a 1 year old production red hen that also has poopy bum sometimes. She hasn't had it lately. Normally all I do is wet several warm paper towels and losen the poop, then trim the feathers around her vent. I'm not sure what causes it though.hens. they've been this way for a year but I can't figure out what is going on.
I know this is an older thread...but I need some help with this issue. I recently started with chicks. All are doing great and are about a week old. One of my buff orphingtons has a very bad mess on its bottom. I tried to wipe it clean and pull it off. When I did this I see her bottom side bulging a little and seems a little red and irritated. It seems to be singled out of the other chicks I have as well. Im not sure what to do...can someone help?
