Well I decided to seperate out the coturnix with the plan being to set up 2 or 3 breeding groups. So I start picking out the jumbos ...... ok, roo, roo, roo, roo

8 jumbos, 7 are roos

Ok change of plan. 7 roos now "growing" for one or two more weeks. The largest will get a girlfriend. The others , well a BBQ sounds good

Lets hope there are some hens in the A&M's & Tuxes.
There are 2 goldens and a tibetan too so I'm off to check the coturnix sticky about sexing them ( please send hen vibes my way

First, want my recipie for stuffed quail?

Second I read a few studies (I can dig them back outta proquest if you'd like), that discussed high mortality of female embrios if there was a heat spike late in the incubation. My first hatch had a heat spike of 112-117 the day before hatch and the eggs that did hatch were all boys, the non-pipped eggs I checked were girls (vent sexed them). Could you have had a malfunction during incubation?

Added note, vent sexing dead chicks is not pleasent, but when the 9 hatched were all male, I suspected the heat spike deaths.

what if there was a heat spike of 105 2 days after setting them? the reason i ask was that it happened to me

That early you should be ok, it seems the last 2-3 days of hatching lead to the killing of female embrios, but there's not yet a conclusion on why it happens, just that it does.

2 goldens = 2 roos
2 tibetans = 1 roo , 1 hen

That just leaves the A&Ms & Tux's to come to the rescue for egg layers.

Saddina - Yes a stuffed quail recipe would be great. There's going to be a whole lot of stuffing going on over here.

No known temp spikes during incubation but that is an intresting theory. Is it just coturnix ? I hatched a bunch of buttons in the same incubator at the same time and best as I can tell right now it looks to be 60% roos . A much better gender mix than those

Interesting read..

I will keep an eye on my bator temps next time. I got lots of roos too.. But I had a female Button Quail sit on her own eggs. I know the temps didnt get high there. She got off her nest alot. She had 4 roos.

Maybe I should run my bator a little cool one time. And a bit warmer the next time and see if there is much of a difference..

Does any one know of any links to any studies about high temps killing off girl embryos..

I feel your pain...I have 4 birds right now and from what I can tell with the vent sexing, 3 of the 4 are roos

So I am planning on getting more birds...but OY what a predicament in the meantime...only one poor little pullet in the bunch.

Good luck with getting some more gals!
