what are the signs that hens will be laying soon?

Do you have a rooster? I do not, and my experience has been that the girls start "squatting" for me when I walk up to them - like they do for the rooster. Also, their combs and wattles seem to be brighter when they're laying or about to lay than when they are younger or moulting.

as above, they will start to squat down, and their combs and wattles become bright red. then you get a nice surprise.
