I dunno about other places, but its not uncommon in our family or others around in this area to give the gift of a starter set of dishes. So, she may have bought you the more expensive of the articles that she may have seen on special and thought it would be a different gift.
Its interesting how some people like or wonder what the motive of the gift, not saying your not right, you know the family not I. My Grandmother taught me when I was little, probably 5, we would pick out these red glass serving dishes, vase, but they had a color that was "washed" on like rainbow colors. There were only 5 pieces that were bought of that collection, my gram died.
Needless to say, they are tucked away like many other dishes that have importance instead of use. (thank you for that opportunity to remember my gram. She died when I was 9)
So use those dishes, and think of who gave them to you for it is a gift of prosperity and bounty.
