What are these little chicks?

That is simply not true. Many times hatchery quality ones do not have five toes. Being polydactyl is dominant, but that doesn't mean they can't carry the recessive four toed trait. If two parents that carried it were bred 25% of offspring would only have four toes. If it's a Silkie mix like I suspect and one parent carried the recessive and the other parent was a normal, non-polydactyl breed, only 25% of chicks would have five toes.
wow 🤔

50% should have 5 toes if one parent was split polydactyl/not, and the other was pure for not-polydactyl. Because the 5 toed parent would give the gene to half their offspring.

Very poor quality Silkies or Silkie mixes. Beak color off for Cochin along with first one having slightly silked feathers
I disagree. Mixes are not common in stores that buy chicks from hatcheries, so probably not Silkie mixes.

And they look more like Cochins than Silkies. You say the beak color is off for Cochin--but the leg color (light), the number of toes (4), the comb (single), and the crest (missing) are wrong for Silkies. Aside from the feather texture, which looks more normal than silkie to me. So they might be poor quality Cochins, but they would be much worse as Silkies.

Sorry, I not sure what I was thinking with the 25% thing 😳 Mental punnet squares are apparently not my specialty. I'll edit my original post. That beak color is fibromelanistic looking. I have never seen a Cochin with that color beak and I'm not even sure how it could pop up... @Overo Mare could this even occur in Cochin Bantams? By mix (I should have clarified), I'm thinking they're an attempt at Sizzles or the like. Not just a random mix. They could have Bantam Cochin in them though, I am just pretty darn sure they have Silkie in them too...

Oh those are ODD. If that is a Cochin, it is a horrible quality one. That down coloration is interesting too.

Gosh Idk. Can you call your farm store and ask where their last batch of chicks came from? Looks like a mixed breed to me. Too many faults for hatchery quality in any single breed.

I asked the day I got them and they said Hoover.
giphy (17).gif

Hoover's couldn't even get barred rocks right last year.
NOTHING would surprise me about their chicks.
I'd guess they are supposed to be cochin.
